Luke’s mommy has a disease called ALS. A disease is when something goes wrong in your body. Some diseases can be cured with medicine, but others can’t. The doctors haven’t found a cure for ALS yet.
I want you to do a few things with me.
Clap your hands.
Stomp your feet.
Say I love ice cream.
Take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds.
Whenever you do those things, your brain is telling your muscles what you want them to do. When someone has ALS, the muscles stop listening to what the brain says. That’s why Luke’s mom can’t walk or talk. The muscles she would use to do those things don’t listen to her anymore.
